Repotting Herbs

It is definitely not summer here anymore.  I know, I know - it hasn't been for some time but I'm just starting to accept it in some ways.  Like closing the garden - that's always hard for me.  I don't want to go back to grocery store veggies.

I also don't want to go back to paying a small fortune for herbs, especially when they are growing like weeds in the garden even right now.  So I thought I would try to dig some of them up and see if they might live inside.

I was desperate for something to put them in and scrounged around until I found these containers.

I started by peeling off the paper on each container and then using it as a template to cut out the scrapbook paper.

I was able to wrap all three containers with a single piece of scrapbook paper and I only had that tiny square leftover that you can see in the photo below.  Talk about efficient.  Woohoo.

I then did a great big no-no and just dug up the plants with the garden soil.  I know I should have gotten a real potting soil but I was just too plain lazy and you know how it is when you just want something done now.

I started with rosemary, oregano, and parsley.

Notice my grubby dirt fingerprints on the middle and left ones?

Now we just have to cross our fingers that these little babies enjoy the warmth and shelter of indoors saving me bundles of dollars all winter long.  :)

I also put some sage leaves into a jar of water to see if they might root. I'll keep you updated on how they're doing in case you are interested in trying this yourself.

This is where I'm partying:

I was just thinking yesterday that I always find this 'closing the garden' for winter so difficult. I finally did mine yesterday. Your herb containers are brilliant!

We put the lawn furniture away yesterday, and I felt a little sad that it will be months before I'm relaxing in the yard again.

I love herbs growing the kitchen window - I really hope yours like the spot. My husband bought some 'gelled' herbs in a squeeze tube and it's just not the same as fresh herbs at all.

Your pots look very cute and it's nice to see you serve my kind of coffee and good snacks!

What a great idea! I like your pots. I decided to do a fall garden this year. I am excited to see if anything comes up. So, no closing the garden yet. I am looking forward to see how your herbs do. In a month or two I may need to dig up my mint and bring it in. Your herbs look beautiful in your window. BTW I am totally jealous of your beautiful farmhouse deep sink!! :)

Terry,
good idea to try them indoors. Clever thinking to use the cans and dress them up, they are adorable and look "happy" sitting there in your window!

I have rosemary and basil in an old Ball jar on my counter right now and the the roots are trying to get to China. I really should stick them in some dirt and see if they'll hang out inside all winter. As well as some other ones outside I should try.
I have a stash of old tin cans for things like this. It's going on my to-do list. Ya know, the "someday" one. :o)

What a great idea! I've had to haul in some of my plants recently because of cold as well. Might need to try this technique out- it looks so cute in your kitchen!
