Thrifted Candleholder Makeover

I am addicted to the rush of finding something cool at the Thrift Store.  My pulse quickens, my palms get sweaty, it's ridiculous.  This is the latest find:

Two bucks.  Yeah, that gives me a little bit of butterflies.  Mmmm.

This should have been a fast and easy makeover because all I wanted to do was to change the colour.  A quick spray paint and I should have been done.

Here it is, ready for the spray, sitting in my new dual cardboard box system.  The second box was set up vertically to catch flying spray (not that I've learned the hard way that I need this on a windy day or anything).

So, the candleholder got a first coat of black spray paint and was left outside to dry.  And then it started to rain.  Grrrr.

I always wondered what would happen if wet spray paint got hit with rain.  Now I guess we all know.

So, the next bright sunny day -- a little sanding, another coat of spray paint, left it out there to dry, and,.................... then it started snowing.  In case you're curious in a science sort of way, wet spray paint looks pretty much the same after getting rained on or snowed on.  Double grrrr.

Also, just to add insult to injury, the second box blew over, and the cat peed in it.  Yep.  I'm down to a single box spray booth again.  Triple grrrr.

He looks innocent, doesn't he.  But he's not, he's a box pee-er!!
Finally, no rain, no snow, another couple of coats, and here is my sweet two-dollar baby.

Worth the rain and the snow and the urine in the end.  :)

One of Those Days

I definitely had 'one of those days' yesterday.  So when I should have been posting something for today, I wasn't.  I wasn't accomplishing much of anything worthwhile.  Sorry about that.  Tomorrow will be better.  Promise.

Link It Up Thursday #8

It's that time of the week again,...Thursday and party time.  Kadie and I both agree that this is our favourite time of the week.  :)  We can't wait to see what you've been up to this week, but before we do, we wanted to mention one thing that has been on our mind -- word verification.  We hate it.  We love your blog, but we hate having to try to decipher those crazy words.

If you have word verification but don't know how to get rid of it, we have the perfect solution.  Adrianne at Happy Hour Projects created an awesome tutorial that walks you through it.  Go here and get rid of it, so we can share our comment love easily with you.  :)

And now, let's take a look at what caught my eye last week:

Melanie used a 99-cent Simplicity pattern to make all these animal hat variations.  She has blackmailed the most adorable little hat model so pop on over to check out the double cuteness at her site.

Bear Rabbit Bear

I feel so inspired to give something like this shelf a try after checking out Jen's tutorial.  She makes it look so easy.

At Home In The Northwest
Marissa has a bunch of great tips for moms (or aunts or babysitters) who want to continue crafting even with wee ones hanging out.

Rae Gun Ramblings

Anne is seriously making me drool with these awesome Eggplant parmigiana and mozzarella stacks.  They are topped with pesto and look so light and crisp.  Mmmmmm.

Domesblissity

Aren't these gorgeous colours!  Amber has the most clever little tutorial for these fabric bowls and vase.  This is a great scrap buster project.

Here are our very simple rules.

1.  Please keep it family friendly.
2.  Link back to our site or grab a button so others can share in the fun.
3.  Following us would be nice (but don't feel you have to)

Grown Up Tag

I can't say that I enjoyed playing tag as a child (too chunky to run, lol), but this grown-up version is a lot of fun.  Amy (of One Artsy Mama fame) tagged me to play along, so I'm going to give it a shot.  First, how about some rules.

RULES
**You must post the rules.
** Answer the 11 questions that the tagger posted for you & then create 11 questions to ask the people you've tagged.
** Tag 11 people and link them in your post.
**Let them know you have tagged them.

Here are Amy's questions:

1. If you could have coffee with any one person, living or not, who would it be?

My husband and I have a running list of people on this list and it changes all the time. Right now, I would choose Jason Crandell.  He is a yogi who has done yoga practise routines for The Yoga Journal.  He gives off a presence of compassion and composure, and possesses the most peaceful soul.

2. What is one quality you'd like to develop in yourself?

Composure.  I react too quickly and instinctively to situations instead of thinking about what I really want to say or do.  I have a quick sense of humour and many times I wish that I would have kept my 'hilarious' comment to myself.

3. What talent do you wish you had?

I wish I could sing well.  I think that it would feel awesome to really belt out a song and have it be on key. In reality, I can get away with a 'happy birthday' but not much more, lol.

4. If you won the lottery {mega-millions}, what would you do with the money?

Well, I would want to make sure that my family and close friends were all set, for starters.  After that, I would want to establish a rescue network for dogs and cats in Canada, scooping up strays and creating a nation-wide spay and neuter program.  I'm a big sucker for a stray.  :)

Toronto Animal Services

5. Which superpower would you choose: the ability to fly, the ability to read minds, or x-ray vision, and why?

I would NOT want to be able to read minds,....who knows what you might find in the minds of other people.  Could be scary.  And I would NOT want x-ray vision because really, the only way I look good is if I'm wearing clothing.  I imagine that other people are the same.  So that leaves flying which doesn't seem to have a huge downside.

6. Share a nickname you have and how you got it.

My step-dad calls me Tanny because as a child my cousins would taunt me with a sing-song, "Terry-Tan, the garbage man." (My name is Terry-Ann in case that doesn't make sense).   Yeah, nice huh.

7. If you could close your eyes right now and be anywhere in the world, where would you choose?

Oooh,...anywhere?  How about at game 7 in the Stanley Cup playoffs with the Boston Bruins winning the cup in the final minutes?  Okay, not likely, so how about in Tuscany sipping wine and eating bread and cheeses while tanned young bucks do manual labour of some sort.  Yeah, that will do.  :)

Physic Tourism

8. What is your favorite season and why?

Mmmm,..I love fall.  Summer is too hot, winter is too cold, spring is too messy, fall is just right.  There are fun things to do like pumpkin patch.  The weather is often perfect, not too cold, not too hot.  I love switching over to comfort foods:  soups and stews and roasts.  The fast pace of summer starts to slow down.  And the colour,....oh yeah.

9. If you could only eat one dessert for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Creme brulee.  No thought required.

Cooking for Engineers

10. Which sense would be the hardest for you to lose: sight, hearing, taste, or smell?  Why?

I think sight would be the most difficult.  All of the things that I enjoy (blogging, crafting, reading, photography) require vision and I'm not sure what life would be like without those things.

11. If you could relive one moment or day in your life, what would it be and why?

I would want to relive the night that my (then) boyfriend and I went to see Phantom of the Opera.  He was a charming fellow and I was an unsophisticated (and nervous)  gal who had not had any exposure to theatre, but that night was absolute magic. (yes, I did marry that charming fellow a few years later).

Now that was actually the fairly easy part.  The hard part is coming up with 11 questions and narrowing down my tags to 11 people.

Here are the questions:

1.  How did you decide to start blogging?

2.  What would be your dream job?

3.  What is your favourite movie or book?

4.  Favourite food?

5.  If you had an entire afternoon free, who would you want to spend it with and doing what?

6.  What is the most significant goal you have achieved to date?

7.  What is your dream vacation?

8.  When you go to weddings, do you dance or sit like a bump?

9.  If you were going to volunteer for an organization, what would it be?

10.  Favourite celebrity or sports star?

11.  What is your best go-to recipe when you have company coming?

And this is who I am tagging:

1.  Ann from On Sutton Place

2.  Mimi of Living in France

3.  Kei of Unfortunately Oh

4.  Adrianne of Happy Hour Projects

5.  Carol-Anne of Use The Good Dishes

6.  Stephanie of Gathered in the Kitchen

7.  Kerry of House TalkN

8.  Mindy of Rindy Mae

9.  Rosemary of VillaBarnes

10.  Terri of A Creative Princess

11.  Lesley of Fabulously Flawed

I hope these gals jump at the challenge and let us get to know them a little better.  Feel free to answer any of these above questions in the comments.  I'd love to read your answers.  :)
